Why the Right Bra Matters More Than You Think

For many women, a bra is something worn every day without much thought. But the truth is, the right bra can make a meaningful difference—not only in comfort, but in confidence, posture, and overall well-being. At Cherished Bra Gallery, we believe that every woman deserves to feel supported, especially during life’s transitions.

Comfort

Whether you are recovering from surgery, navigating changes in your body, or simply searching for all-day comfort, finding the right bra starts with understanding your unique needs. A properly fitted bra should feel like a gentle hug—not restrictive, painful, or something you can’t wait to take off at the end of the day. Comfort should never be compromised, and support should always feel intentional.

Support After Surgery

After surgery or medical treatment, comfort becomes even more essential. Many women experience sensitivity, swelling, or changes in shape that make traditional bras uncomfortable or impractical. Specialized bras, including mastectomy bras and wire-free options, are thoughtfully designed to provide soft support, accommodate prostheses, and promote healing without sacrificing style or dignity. Features such as wider straps, breathable fabrics, and seamless construction can significantly improve daily comfort and peace of mind.

Bra fitting

Proper bra fitting is another key element that is often overlooked. Wearing the wrong size can lead to shoulder pain, back discomfort, skin irritation, and poor posture. Bodies naturally change over time due to age, weight fluctuation, hormonal shifts, or medical procedures, which is why regular fittings are so important. A professional bra fitting helps ensure that your bra works with your body—not against it—and allows you to move through your day with ease.

Confidence

Beyond physical comfort, the right bra has a powerful emotional impact. Feeling supported and comfortable can restore confidence and help women reconnect with their bodies. For breast cancer survivors and those navigating health challenges, this sense of confidence can be especially meaningful. A well-fitting bra can be a quiet but powerful reminder that you are deserving of care, beauty, and respect at every stage of life.

How can I measure myself at home if I can’t come in person?

We’re here to help you find the right fit—even from home!

Here’s how you can measure yourself for a post-mastectomy bra:

What You’ll Need:

  • A soft measuring tape

  • A mirror or a helper (optional, but helpful)

  • A well-fitting, non-padded bra (if you wear one)

  • Step 1: Measure Your Band Size

  • Stand straight and wrap the measuring tape snugly around your ribcage, just under your bust.

  • Make sure the tape is level and not too tight.

  • Wrap the measuring tape loosely around the fullest part of your remaining breast or chest area.

  • Make sure the tape is level and not compressing the tissue.

  • Calculate Cup Size (if needed):

  • Subtract your band size from your bust measurement.

  • Each inch difference = 1 cup size (A=1", B=2", C=3", etc.)

    Special Considerations for Post-Mastectomy Fittings:

  • If you wear a prosthesis or shaper, we recommend wearing it during measuring. If you haven’t been fitted for a prosthesis yet, no worries—just let us know during your virtual consultation.

  • Do I need an appointment for a fitting? Yes, we recommend scheduling an appointment to ensure you receive personalized attention in a private and comfortable setting. We also offer virtual fittings and consultations to help you find the perfect fit from home. By appointment only.

  • Are there styles that look more like everyday lingerie but still work with prosthetics? Yes, You don’t have to sacrifice style for support or function. We carry a thoughtfully curated selection of post-mastectomy bras that look and feel like traditional lingerie—but are specifically designed to hold a prosthesis securely and comfortably.

    These styles feature:

  • Delicate lace, satin, and soft fabrics

  • Pocketed cups for prosthetics or shapers

  • Wire-free or soft-wire support for post-surgery comfort

  • Modern silhouettes like plunge, balconette, bralette, and T-shirt bras

  • Brands that specialize in feminine, elegant, and functional designs

  • How many bras should I have?

  • We recommend having at least 3 to 5 well-fitting bras in rotation: 1 to wear, 1 to wash, 1 (or more) to rest

  • This keeps your bras in better shape and gives your body comfort and flexibility throughout the week.

Do you carry wire-free or front-closure bras? Yes, we do! At Cherished Bra Gallery, comfort and accessibility are top priorities—especially for those recovering from surgery or managing long-term wear needs.

  • Wire-Free Bras

  • We carry a wide selection of wire-free bras that still offer excellent support and shape. These are ideal for:

  • Post-mastectomy or lumpectomy wear,

  • Sensitive scar tissue or tender areas,

  • Everyday comfort without compromise.

    Front-Closure Bras

  • We also offer front-closure bras, which are easier to put on and take off—especially if you:

  • Have limited range of motion,

  • Are recovering from recent surgery,

  • Prefer a smooth back for comfort or under clothing.

  • You’ll find styles ranging from soft-cup sleep bras to supportive everyday and active bras, all with pocketed designs to securely hold a prosthesis or shaper if needed.

Thoughtfully crafted to elevate what matters most.
